The Maritime Prints business is for sale. At 78 yrs of age and after 26 years I’ve reluctantly concluded that I need to draw stumps. But a huge amount of love and effort has gone into the project so it needs to go to someone who can lavish a similar amount of care on it - it’s been a hugely rewarding business. A typical etching by Rowland Langmaid shows the Royal Yacht (Rear Admiral D.B.N. North CB CSI CMG CVO ADC), Rear Admiral Royal Yachts, wearing Court Flags, at left foreground, leading QUEEN ELIZABETH (Captain S. St Leger Moore RN) the Flagship of Admiral Sir William Fisher GCB CVO, C-in-C Mediterranean Fleet, to sea after the Review for a concentration shoot.

The 1st Battle Squadron consisted of QUEEN ELIZABETH, ROYAL SOVEREIGN (Captain B.H. Ramsay MVO RN), RAMILLIES (Captain R. Leatham RN), REVENGE (Captain L.E. Holland RN, who was lost with HOOD in action against BISMARK), Flagship of Vice Admiral Sir Charles Forbes KCB DSO, Flag Officer Commanding 1st Battle Squadron Mediterranean Fleet; and RESOLUTION (Captain J.H.D. Cunningham MVO RN). The squadron had briefly returned from the Mediterranean for the Review.

Rowland Langmaid was born on Vancouver Island in 1897 and joined the Royal Navy in 1910. After service at Gallipoli in HMS AGAMEMNON and then in RENOWN, he retired in 1922. He returned to the Active List in the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 1939 and served as Official Admiralty Artist to the Mediterranean Fleet on the staff of Admiral Cunningham and succeeding Commanders-in-Chief.

Painting in oil and watercolour and an accomplished engraver, Langmaid’s style is very similar to W.L. Wyllie’s.
